My improvement from 2014-2015

This year has been a big change from the creating little videos about ourselves in sophomore e-comm. We create videos to be shown on ONW NOW which means it has to meet a lot of expectations not only the guideline of the video it takes a lot more interviews, b-roll, and extra footage just incase you need it.

There is a lot more time spent in making theses videos and i think the time is worth it i have grow in so many ways.

I have improved my editing skills by having so many back to back projects thats it just mentally makes me improve every little bit about my video and i know all of the short cuts i know where to find pretty much anything on final cut pro everything seems easier the more you work on it.

Other people have also impacted my skills my video partners give me tips on how to do certain things like how to hold the camera, the best way to edit and so many more.

I think i have also improved in the aspect of shots by the camera, the little things can make a difference the way you hold the camera for instance if you don't hold it right the shot might be shaky and you can't have it in your video.

Different angles and shots that i have learned over the year like the 6 shot system it can really improve your video and also make it look more pleasing to the eye. Balancing your camera to white so the color isn't off is a big thing.

Or by doing a sequence of events to further educate the viewer of what young on. There are so many things i have learned throughout the year heres one of my best videos

The studio is very new this year i have grow so much in learning how to set the mic's up right so that the anchors can be heard, The sound room i have learned how to work that for the ONW NOW show I can floor direct which means you can talk to the people in the control room but you are also the only one to let the anchors know anything thats going on and when to start.

There are so many things i have learned from the studio that i will bring on in my further education in e-comm.

Next year I will be a 4 year senior in The E-comm program, I how thats the year i will learn the most and do my beast projects but my big hopes are being able to do anything.

Any package any thing in the control room, anything that scant do now. I would just like to be an over all better student that can make me better overall.

I want to get better in the aspect of video editing i feel like there is so much more i can learn and improve on i want my videos to be one of the bests i want to maybe do this sort of thing after high school and if i am going to i want to know that i will succeed.

Pre-production (Inside the 21st century Program E-communication)

Working Title: Inside the 21st century program E-communication

Producer: Tiajah Holt

My documentary is about the video production program of entertainment and convergence journalism . The main conflict is when you are done with e9 what strand are you going in to? It is my job to give you a visual so you can visually see what your options are so the process of picking is a little faster. Ultimately, I want the audience to feel its easier to understand the strands through a video not just a page full of words explaining the strands.

Court Allam

  • The teacher of our strand Convergence journalism and Sports Information Directors at ONW, who also teaches video for e9 and sophomores looking to pursue the video strand.
Anna-Lynn Morris
  • The teacher of our strand video entertainment at ONW, who also teaches video for e9 and sophomores looking to pursue the video strand.
Sean Mcpartland
  • 1 year student in the convergence journalism strand at ONW.
Hadley Oehart
  • 1 year student in the entertainment strand at ONW
Brennon Wohlford
  • 1year student in Sports Information Directors strand at ONW.
Act I
Showing clips and visuals of what they all have in common and how they relate to each other

Act II
What convergence Journalism is about and what you do in the strand step by step the video production, the editing process and the production of ONW NOW.

Act III
What SID is and how it interacts with ONW NOW what they do and how they do it

ActIII
What entertainment creates and does throughout the year and how its different from all the other stands

Conclusion
You have an option of which one you want to do you can only choose one when you are a junior and senior you have to stick to your decision

When i get back from my winter break i will start filming strand by strand until i have all the footage to start editing

Señora Walsh From Peru

My partner and I Samantha planned to make this video about Señora Walsh's transition in to america and how Walsh  teaches her styles from Peru in to her daily teaching schedule but it didn't quiet work out that way she gave us way better answers than we expected so Samantha and I made the video around the great and interesting things she said I think the video turned out great considering we took a whole different scope in the middle of the project!

We took a lot of footage of her in class interacting with her students and her teaching then we took a good 30 minutes interviewing her considering some of that time was prep for the interview (setting up audio and setting up the camera). Once we got done with our interview we came back and combined the footage of her teacher and cut out all of her good answers and made the video in about 2 or 3 hours.

I learned even if you have a scope of a project after you get all the footage it might change and it might take a turn for the best which is good I think its also good that we had enough time to change was so quick we wiped the story up pretty fast considering.

If I could change anything about how I developed the video I would interview one of her students and see how her teaching is and how it has effected her or his spanish. Then maybe another spanish teacher from america and have her talk about Señora Walsh. I think having all those people say those nice things about her would be a great thing for the story.

I would do the setting of the interview in the same place, I would pretty much do everything the same I liked what we did with the project I thought it worked well with the project. Im proud of the video we made and i wouldn't want to change much I liked all of it.

I would draw that never just stick to your first ideas about the story, if you find more things in the process of the video add it will make the video better. Overall I think this was a good video and glad we chose this subject.

Good deads pay off

At now we have Prop Box Nominees which is people who do good things for other people and someone notices it they are nominated and we got the top nominees in an interview and asks them what they did to get nominated and why they thought they needed to do the right thing.

We went to go to ask the kids when we could interview them and we interviewed them individually and asked them all the same questions so that they can match up to make the video better. we made sure to interview in places that would make the light good and help the video with visual aid.

This month we started doing a new layout to make the prop box videos better and to really have a visually pleasing video. It was little harder to put together, we figured it out. It was one of the best ones in my opinion because it was visually pleasing.

I could have interviewed them in the same place so it looked more put together gotten b-roll of them talking with friends or in class doing their work. B-roll is just footage of the subject that you can incorporate in to the interview and pretty much make the video off of the b-roll.

I liked how we changes the look of the video! I think it really made it better over all we had clips of all the nominees at the beginning and then we went along with each of their beginnings, middle, and ends of their stories.
Everything can be better i thought that the videos before this were good but this is way better i learned to never stop pushing and keep striving to what could come out of it. Overall i enjoyed the project and thought it turning out great.

5 tips for a perfect interview

5 steps to follow for a good Interview

1: Set up your camera eye level to have your subject that you are interviewing.

2:Hold a sheet of white paper to the front of your camera it depends on your camera but you should go to menu and there it will say white balance that is what you want to do.
  • Set up your interview by setting up their mic so that the audio is good for your final video ( Tip: make sure if the subject being interviewed doesn't have on a color that matches the mic tell them to put it up their shirt so it is not seen)

3: Set up your camera so that  it doesn't cut off their head but is also a medium shot
  • Keep them on the left or the right of the shot do not put them in the middle you want them to be facing into the empty space that the interviewer is at.

4: Set up your interview by setting up their mic so that the audio is good for your final video ( Tip: make sure if the subject being interviewed doesn't have on a color that matches the mic tell them to put it up their shirt so it is not seen)

5: Make sure that you have well thought out questions and show them the questions so they can get ready for their answers

All of these Tips should be used to make a great interview enjoy!

6 Shot system
The purpose of the 6 shot system is to establish the setting and what the subject is doing and to also get some angles that are pleasing to the viewers

The 6 shots are:
Extra wide: a shot that has whole object of interest in it plus an establishing shot to show where the scene takes place.
Wide: A closer shot of the full object to see what is the object doing or what is it.
Medium: shot above the waist if its a person
Over the shoulder: To get a look like its almost them looking at it not the camera also to show what is happening with their hands or what they are doing
Close up of hands: to establish after the OTS to show the audience what is happening and to also give an sequence event.
Close up of face: To show the persons emotion of what they are doing.

A big rule for doing this is you can not go over 180 degrees which means if you start at the front of her you can only go to 180 degrees of her body either right i=or left if you do more than 180 like 360 it confuses the viewer and they don't know whats going on.

Student Teachers

In this video we went out to find the view of student teachers at Olathe Northwest we filmed 3 different student teachers all in different departments with different teachers to find out what they liked best and their challenges.

We typed up questions for the interview first, then we went to go ask them when they would be available to be interviewed we took B-roll before we interviewed. we know we wanted to do a 3 person feature in the video with the same topic student teachers. they are all evenly represented in the video.

I learned along the way that its hard to be able to go with everyones schedules and figure out a time to interview and also get b-roll because they all have different hours.

If i could do this video again i would interview the teachers that are hosting the student teachers because they have an impact on them and how they teach they also know a lot about them which would be benifitial for the video.

I would do the same thing by doing 3 different teachers or even more i think it gets better the more teachers you get because they all have different view and i think that is a vital part of a good video!

to maybe get more than one person and maybe have a good interview make sure everything is good sound lighting position of the person being interviewed

The story behind Debbie Evers

Debbie Evers

Q: What is your full name?
A: Debbie Evers

Q:When did you know you wanted to work with administration?

When my daughter was in 3rd grade i got a teacher assistant job then moved on to being a high school secretary down in Oklahoma. Then we moved down here and i got this position. I wasn't really sure if this is what i wanted to do but i just happened and Im glad it did!

Q:Do you close by the school?
A:Its 1.8 miles according to my car odometer!

Indi Cowie Videos

My favorite version was the second web one i think it really showed how she connected with her family and also had an amazing passion for her sport it also showed un like all of the other ones that she also still plays soccer and thrives.

Shows how much she loves what she does, shows her favorite moves, tell us that she is the only women to even do those tricks.

The difference between these videos is two of them showed her family and one showed how close she was to her family, and only one told us she was planning on going to the University of North Carolina to play soccer.

The TV version talking and told her story the whole time and the web version let her tell the story. The TV version shows her publicity side not only what tricks she likes where she has been to show the world what she's got.

I would emulate the different high and low shots the really close up interview the talking with her family to see there opinion on her whole thing. I would go mostly with the web version because it really demonstrates her much better.

First annual HC parade

Homecoming Parade

I decided to make a package over the parade because we have never had a Homecoming parade at ONW. We made the video so that people could have an over view of the whole event.

We decided it would be the best if we had 2 or 3 cameras and we would record all of the clubs and sports teams with different angles and locations. we interviewed random students and teachers from PRT middle school, Meadow lane elementary, and ONW. Our story board wasn't set and stone we filmed and put all of the clips together in a video summarizing the whole event. we favorited our favorite clips and arranged them by floats and clubs we added some interviews and clips of the crowd to show the atmosphere during the parade.

I learned that even if you have like 3 hours of clips and you need it under 2 minutes long you have to make sure everything gets in there that needs to be apart of the video to correctly summarize the event. Collaboration was a big part of his project we had 3 different cameras going around the parade we had to move withe the parade but still get every float and have different angles for each of the cameras we had 3 people working on the video for the first 30 seconds of the video and it ended up being just me that had to have the deadline accomplished I met the deadline after hours of work.

I would have one person work on the whole video editing part because with too many ideas it gets too messy and takes to long to actually put the video together because only one person can actually use the computer the rest of the people are just there sharing there ideas and it gets too over whelming.

I would have the 3 or even more cameras out there because that really had a positive impact on the video some people got some really good angles of things others missed. I think it like we covered the whole parade because we were all set in different places and it made it very hard to miss anything.

Have several different camera angles and make sure you actually have more than enough for your video just incase the shots didn't match up, or the lighting was off, Etc...

I thought this project was a big success over all the video turned out great and we managed to get every club and sport on the parade we also got clips from all the schools which really put the video together.

The idea from this video came from Mr. Allam our video teacher.

I think the best thing about our video package was the interviews we got alot of good answers from the students and we had very good lighting for 2/3 interviews. We had alot of great b-roll it really does make the package easier because we had more video to pick from and we could make it just how we wanted.
I would do better lower thirds so it explains the package more i also would want to get better lighting in every shot to make it the best it can be.

 Reflection
9/4
  • What went well with my project was the editing sean and i edited together and after only a little bit of shots we pulled it on to a video and it ended up very well i also think the b roll was great for our project it helped us build a sequence of events!
  • I learned new and better ways to interview how to position the camera and to do so that it looks really good to the viewers. I also learned what is expected of this year how we are going to do videos this year and i think it will make ONW NOW better over all.
  • I would do better interviews next time get a lot more variety of b roll so i either don't repeat myself in the video or have more options. I will find better stories and things people want to know about.

One personal goal:

I hope to gain the ability to work with more people through technology and get better at editing and better at making video stories. i also would like to get better on my camera work shots and angles and the way i put them together in a good project. i hope to accomplish this by being very interactive in all things i do this year.
Goal for the Convergence class:

During this school year in e-communictaion i hope to get closer to the people around me by making and helping each other projects. I hope to make ONW Now better for everyone during this school year with help from my peers. I will do all of this by contribution the set and getting closer to the people around me to help with projects and exc.

Goal for myself in Convergence:

I want to make my videos and projects better i want to get involved i other strands of ecomm and help make all strands as good as they can be with each others help. i hope to get better at an editer and as an anchor which i mainly want to be focused on this year i can do these things by practicing making outside projects and practicing my lines outside of class to better how i contribute to the ONW Now class of 2014-2015

The kerning game

The kerning game is a game which it gives you a font and you have to move the letters to fit in the spots f the original text it was actually kind of fun i liked testing to see how i knew my text and fonts. I was challenging but i managed to pull through and get 100% sometimes. The game gives you 100% when you get little to n mistakes. so you can earn from it this is what it looks like.

The google logo

The Google logo. It seems to be such a mystery but is it really did they put as much thought in to it as we thought they did? is there something behind all of these colors? The answer is the Google company wanted primary colors a clean look on their logo and they chose each letter in which looked right they chose it in a minimal amount of time. The google logo seems so in to it but really its just very easy.

e-magine at Olathe Northwest

e-Magine was a great experience at Olathe Northwest this year i had a lot of fun watching the videos of fellow video, animation, graphic design and web makers. and getting to talk to and meet the students that made the top 5 lists that was announced and that i liked. I think its really cool how people travel from all over Kansas and Missouri to be at our festival to see their artwork on the big screen and to receive their award. The announcers also impressed me because they didn't mess-up and they just introduced these acts very well. I had a lot of fun at e-Magine i hope to go next year.

The movie poster

My poster ( On the left) uses 6 different colors to display the movie of the Wizard Of OZ. I started with a yellow brick road and Put in her shoes and added a radiant to give a sunny affect and to make them shine more i added the text in and i thought about the wand and i had an idea that maybe i could have an effect as if she's holding the wand and its covering the O in the OZ i think my poster is like the poster by Saul Bass ( to the right) because it
shows more that 3 colors to display the message and i also think its simple but tells a story which i went off of when i made my design of The Wizard Of OZ.

The visit to the Nerman

The Lonely one By: Asad Faulwell

On my Visit to the Nerman Museum at Johnson County Community College.
I saw the most beautiful things, a lot of things caught my eye. This piece make you want to think.
It makes you want to think about everything that is going on in the picture. It caught my eye because
of all of the things going on in the picture the triangles shooting from the mountain endlessly. The actual
flowers are pictures of people who have inspired her through out her whole life. I also am astonished by the
beauty of the streaks through the whole piece the zentangles all over its just a huge wonderland.
